Disabled Churches

There has to be a perception that every
church is a place of welcome for ‘All of God’s people’, and this will include
differently-abled people. That perception will be borne out by the way the
church building ‘invites’ people in by its openness. Also the accessible
liturgy, that is the: hymn books and prayers books used in the church. In some church’s overhead projection of materials, which is not always clear or
visible to everyone due to colour of the text used, choice of text, and also
the fact that some people just cannot see the projected words – that is
exclusion.

There are many other things as well that are
barriers to people who are differently abled. Such as the lack of a loop system
for the hard of hearing, enlarged written print materials for people with
visual impairments; adequate toilet facilities for people who are differently
abled, and also if a church really wants to include residents from local units
and homes that have more specific needs wet rooms may be required.

This list may look large, and I am sure you
are already adding to it as you read, but it should not be not daunting! I hope
over time that these pages will help you a little with the access issues you
may have come across.

Jesus replied …” you shall love the
Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your
mind, and with all your strength.’ ³¹The second is this, ‘You shall love your neighbour
as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”

So if your neighbour is differently-abled love them all the same
…

One last personal word: When you come across
spelling or grammar mistakes please do be aware that several neurological
attacks have left the author differently-abled and not always able to see these
slip-ups.
